Christmas in United States is one of the most important festivals celebrated with great enthusiasm. The multi-cultural and pluralistic society of the United States is keen in celebrating the holiday season in several unique ways. Inspite of the variety of ways to celebrate Christmas in America, there are some traditions that are uniformly formed by the Americans. These include the traditional Christmas tree, Santa Claus with this reindeers, Christmas cards, Yule log, and mistletoe. Going back to the history, we come to know that Christmas celebrations in the United States dates back to the 19th century. Christmas started gaining its popularity in America in 1830. The concept of decorating Christmas tree reached the USA in 1840s. The country saw the appearance of Santa Claus, the mythical character with long white beard, red suit, and round belly. Santa Claus is actually the Dutch word for the legendary St. Nicholas.

Christmas celebrations in America begin a month before the festival. The spirit of Christmas is quiet visible in the country during the festive season. Shops remain opened until the midnight. Christmas programs, Christmas carnivals, parties, games, and activities escalate the festive mood of people in the USA. In the Christmas carnivals, small children look too cute in their little Santa Claus costumes, reindeer, and angels’ costumes. Women in the country get busy in making special Christmas recipes.

In the United States, the traditional Christmas tree is decorated beautifully with Christmas ornaments, candies and a star tree topper that represents the star of Bethlehem. Sprigs of holly and mistletoe, Christmas lights and images of Santa are used to decorate the American homes. The Nativity scene is also set up. The exchange of Christmas gifts and greetings is a common tradition for Christmas followed by the majority of Americans. Christmas Day parades give a colorful display with bands and dancers. Christmas carols and songs are famous everywhere in the country.

On Christmas Eve, people observe Midnight Mass. Nativity scenes and concerts are church activities on Christmas Eve. The traditional Christmas dinner consists of roast turkey with sauces and vegetables. A rich, fruity Christmas pudding with pumpkin pies and brandy sauce is served as the dessert. Since the holiday season is a snowy winter in many parts of the country, the dinner is usually eaten indoors. People in America thank the Almighty for his blessings and gracious presence during the holiday season and wish for a prosperous New Year.
